A Letter from the Commodore —Decisions in light of the Coronavirus—March 11th

As you may be aware, we recently cancelled the Friday night Bingo event. This was out of an abundance of caution until the Board could meet and decide on an appropriate course of action for the next several weeks. First and foremost, we want each of you to protect yourselves during the corona virus outbreak. Pay attention to the advice that is being provided from the many sources – CDC, Washington State, Kitsap County, as well as other health provider networks.

In addition to our individual responsibilities, we, as a group, have a commitment to be good citizens of our community, ensuring we are conducting our fun and business in a safe manner. In consideration of that, the Board has decided to close the bar on Friday nights in March; the St. Paddy’s Day Dinner has been postponed; and the following club activities have been cancelled: March 19 – KCYC General Meeting and March 27 – Friday Night Meatloaf Contest. The March 20-22 Poulsbo Cruise will still go on! These decisions were not made lightly and were driven by the guidance that is currently publicly available. We are continuing to err on the side of caution. The Board will continue to monitor the situation, and make future recommendations, all with the goal of getting our club back to normal operations as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

In spite of these decisions, I want you to know KCYC is alive, well and very active. If you are not aware, much of the club work happens in small gatherings, committees and individual efforts. As I write this, the KCYC memorial walk is being constructed, the 2020 facilities committee is completing a design document, the membership committee is focused on recruitment and value creation, the social committee is planning great events, the Ladies Lunch is being planned, Friday night fun continues to be innovative, and our cruise captains are focused on the next fun voyage while our website team continues to improve our underlying process and web functionality.

So, what’s next?
• We will continue to use appropriate cleaning and sanitization. For our members and or renters, we will be enhancing the availability of hand sanitizer at the club and doubling down on the sanitization of surfaces at the facility after use.
• We will continue to ensure we are leveraging Kitsap County Health recommendations.
• We will evaluate additional facility refurbishment and project activities that can take advantage of the facility’s reduced use.

All of the aforementioned activities, committees, and project work at KCYC will continue at its normal pace through March. Stay tuned as we move forward through this journey together. We will provide an update after the next Board meeting, this coming Tuesday.

News from the Social Committee

While the coronavrus has thrown a monkey wrench into the short-term KCYC social event calendar, we are still forging ahead with plans for the year. Gourmet sandwich night and the Ladies Luncheon in April, the Wine Walk in May, and the Solstice Pig Roast in June. More fun beyond. Put on your optimist hat and plan to join us.

Friday Night Socials

Friday nights will return as soon as it is deemed healthy and safe to do so. Meanwhile, we are sitting at home thinking up fun stuff to do. If you have ideas or are just ready to host someone else’s idea please contact Kimpage827@gmail.com. Spring is almost here so we can start thinking about drinks on the deck.

Thank you to Linda MacEllven and Diane Nuñez for hosting the Costco tasting game night party. A good time was had by all.

2020 Vision - Your thoughts?
By Ken Dalgleish

Thanks to the hard work of so many members, we now enjoy a very solid foundation to build from. Our financials, cruises, events, and community contributions are all set in a positive direction. But, I think there is more we can accomplish.

Our changing community requires leadership to ensure it has an appropriate connection to water based activities, inclusive social events, and a giving community. We are - "The Best Little Yacht Club in WA." It's a great and achievable goal that requires everyone's input to set the right standard and direction for ourselves - and that's where you come in. I think KCYC can play an integral role is shaping the future of the Kingston community.

For example:
•  Shouldn't boating and sailing education for youth and adults be an integral part of our club?
•  How do we embrace "land yachts" (RV's) to be an avenue of growth for the club?
•  Can we provide alternative water access (kayaks, SUP, etc.) to enhance the community's enjoyment of the water?
•  How do we leverage our assets to help the Kingston business community?
•  Can we focus on our youth in a way that develops future leadership and appreciation for our water based activities?

I can't wait to hear your ideas as we shape the future of KCYC.

We Need a Boat

KCYC would like to again thank Mike and Lori Priestly for the use for their boat High Life in 2017 and 2018 and to Joseph Charnes for use of Aurora in last year’s Seattle Opening Day Parade. It is that time again…. we need to begin to prepare!

KCYC’s representation in Seattle Opening Day Parade has become a great tradition that we can’t let go latent….not right now with so much excitement in the club building. We placed (what place?) last year and need to show up again.

This year’s theme is “Rock Around the Dock”. Sounds like a boat load of fun.

Here is what we need:
1. A boat and captain to enter into the parade
2. A boat decoration committee and committee lead – this is the crew that will being now to determine what our design might be. They will then participate in the build of the design, ensuring we are ready by the first weekend in May

The boat would need to be in Seattle on Friday night, May 1 through Sunday May 3. The owner/operator would be aboard for decorating the boat on Friday evening and /or Sat morning and command the boat through the parade. The parade is approximately from 11am - 1pm. The owner’s operator will need to check in to get the boat number, but I will do the required registration.

Please let Sandi know as soon as possible if you have an interest in this event…it is a lot of fun!!!

Send Sandi an email if you can help.

On the Passing of Jimmy James

Jimmy James, a KCYC member since 1989, passed away last week in peace with Mary, his wife of 35 years by his side. Having a hand in the raising of six young family members, he has imparted a love of the water and sailing to the entire family. Coupled with the countless lives that Jimmy touched, he has left a legacy of respect for outdoor activities and the PNW. He lived 90 fulfilling years focused on his love of people and the outdoors.

Jimmy started sailing at age 6 and sailing played a large role in his life, and that of his family. Together with their son Tom, he and Mary actively used their 27 foot Santana, Bodacious, to sail the Salish Sea including three circumnavigations of Vancouver Island. Jimmy and Mary moved to the James’ Family Beach Place on Appletree Cove in 1989 and soon joined the Kingston Cove Yacht Club, It was a homecoming of sorts, as his mom Edie James was one of KCYC’s founding members.

[We encourage you to read more about Jimmy’s life in the news article “The Passing of Jimmy James” on the KCYC website by clicking on the link below. The article is listed under the "Sunshine and Clouds" category.]

Friday Night Costco Food & Game Night

Our first Friday Game Night was a hit. A Costco foodie feast was available (minus the hairnets) and participants at the tables played word games, jenga, rummikub, scrabble, backgammon, cribbage, poker, and other games.  It was far from a quiet night ... not too competitive are we?  We have to plan another one soon; there's even talk of a Poker Tournament!  Many thanks to Diane and Linda for hosting.

Brownsville Trip to Italy 2020

Cruise to Brownsville

Our trip to Italy was fantastic….and we didn’t even have to worry about any virus! We had 5 boats and 2 RVs make the trip over, plus others who came over to join us Friday evening. Once again we had a great time around the fire pit thanks to Jeff Kutz for bring over a load of wood and to Joseph for building and feeding the fire. Afterwards we all headed to the Brownsville deli where they had a fun band playing and provided $5 hamburgers for us! It was a lively crowd and the place was packed.

For those staying overnight, Saturday morning started with a delicious breakfast complete with fruit, eggs, sausage, and choice of pancakes or waffles. Then the cooking began. The aromas wafted through the club throughout the day as we transformed the club to a little Italy.

We had over 50 people come for a fantastic evening, starting with cocktails and lively conversation followed by a delicious Italian dinner including Baked Ziti, Wild Mushroom Lasagna, salad and garlic bread and Italian red wine. A good time was had by all!
