A Message from the Commodore

Thank you to all the members for allowing me to step into this role as your Commodore.  I want to start by recognizing the great work done by the board members over the past two years.  It was a privilege to work with them to accomplish so much.  With your support, we faced into some important business challenges and made decisions that positioned the club to weather this crazy COVID year and emerge still healthy and alive.  Thank you all.

I am excited to work with this new Board…what a great team.  We will continue our focus to make this the best little yacht club and to HAVE FUN!

Here is my challenge to you as members.  Bring us your ideas…what you would like more of…what you would like less of…creative ideas for Friday nights and events.  Help us turn up the fun factor creatively, safely.  It takes a village, right?

Highlights from the October General Meeting

Approvals, Awards, new events and the change of Watch dominated the October General Meeting.  The Category 1 bylaw has finally been approved to improve financial stability.  This year's awards were awarded:  Nels Anderson Memorial Distinguished Service Award to Robin Lott, Lona McFarlane Memorial Distinguished Service Award to Julie Turner, Sand Bar Award to Stan Mack and Boating Family of the Year to Chuck Turner.

Social Events are back! The Commodores Ball scheduled for October 17th and Friday nights with Chili Con Carne and Cornbread by Bill Orr and Kathy Satre and Mexican Lasagna by Shelley and John Gantz.  The new cruise captain, Steve Page, has announced a new meeting for the Cruise committee.  Activity has already started with the Victoria Splash on August 1st. 

The Treasurer, Jack Lott, has reported that financially it's been a challenging year.  Some recent revenue has been realized as well as Friday Nights and watching expenses is helping the Club to refrain from taking from reserve accounts.

Lona McFarlane Memorial Distinguished Service Award 2020 – Julie Turner

This award is given to a woman in the Club who is recognized for her outstanding and distinguished service to the Club.  This award is normally presented at the Mother’s Day (Ladies Luncheon) in May.  This year the award goes to a lady who has contributed to the very core of the club.  Her involvement has established the groundwork for every event, activity, and communication.  As a result of her contribution the Club has entered a new era, with a new image and a new website.  For her commitment and perseverance, we recognize Julie Turner as the 2020 Lona McFarlane award recipient!

Nels Anderson Memorial Distinguished Service Award 2020 - Robin Lott

The NELS ANDERSON MEMORIAL DISTINBUISHED SERVICE AWARD was established in 1976.  It is the highest honor that is bestowed on a member of the Kingston cove Yacht Club.  This award is in memory of Nels Anderson, a charter member of this club whose strong, upright character and record of achievements and accomplishments inspired his fellow club members to go the extra mile in the interest of this club.  This award is presented by the Commodore to that individual who has shown by their actions that they have, indeed, gone the extra mile.

In 2020, a year that shall forever be remembered in infamy, this award goes to an individual who has been an active contributor through their entire membership.  Many members have provided significant contributions to the club.  Some are visible to the membership and others work behind the scenes.  This is an individual who works behind the scenes every day for the club. They are always a step ahead and thinking about what’s next.  In many ways they are the calendar and heartbeat of the club.  Have you ever wondered why the club’s communications are so clever, inspiring, and inviting?  Well, it’s due to the creativity, dedication, and thoughtful purpose of a very special lady.  For years her contributions have made this club a special place. It is my pleasure to award the 2020 Nels Anderson Memorial Distinguished Service Award to Robin Lott.

Boating Family of the Year 2020 — Chuck Turner

And he redeemed himself with the San Juan cruise where he was awarded with an award for “most miles traveled”….visiting multiple islands in a single day.  His first mate especially liked Rosario Resort on Orcas Island, but enjoyed the shopping on all the islands.  They have a complete collection of matching t-shirts and cups from just about every San Juan island.

I am very happy to give this Boating Family of the Year award to Chuck Turner, a very welcome addition to our boating activities.  Your Island Gypsy ship, named Toymaker, is a beautiful ship.

Sandbar Award 2020 - Stan Mack

This is a time honored award, beginning in 1976 is given to: An individual displaying the most outstanding seamanship, skill, cunning and diligence in outwitting the elements and surviving both at sea and ashore. And, in the expending of such outstanding efforts, distinguishes himself or herself by committing the most fabulous, or simply the most, faux pas for the yachting year.  Last year I struggled as we had very few (if any) boating remarkable incidents.  And my apologies to Jerry Kirschner for laying it on his shoulders in my amusement.

That being said…we had quite a few runners up this year….on an especially memorable cruise to Port Townsend.  So let me run through a few of those before we make the award.

• Well, I already mentioned Chuck who headed out into winds, without his hatches battened, arriving totally soaked and I mean everywhere body, soul and boat.  Pour Maria kissed the ground upon docking.
• Then we had Lyn and Bob who ran aground coming out of Kingston Cove.  Well need I say more on that one?
• We also had Tom Ruge arriving on only one engine…trying to come into the slip stern in….until we finally got him to turn and go into another slip bow first. 
• Then there was Tony Clark, bless his soul, but he was certainly guilty of a party foul…or should I say “potty foul”.  Those who were there know what I mean and I shan’t say more.
  

But now for the award….on the Point Hudson trip a few of tucked into Mystery Bay on the way north.  Well one of those was a member who is a proficient and renowned submarine officer who…well can you guess it?  Ran aground in Mystery Bay  Apparently there are no needs for navigation aids under water.  And with that I announce our Sand Bar recipient for this year…..Stan Mack

From the Social Committee

While the ongoing pandemic has severely limited KCYC’s social events, we are trying offer food (and drinks) on Friday Nights while having the club be a safe place to socialize. That said, we are desperately seeking volunteers to host the meals on Fridays. It’s your choice what to prepare, anything from casseroles or soups and stews, to cheeseburgers or sandwiches. You’ll be reimbursed for whatever you spend on ingredients, and you’ll have help at the club the night you host (servers, cleanup, etc.).

Calling All KCYC RVers

Many of us in the club have RVs as well as, or instead of, boats. Why don't we get organized and accompany the fleet on cruises? First we'll go where the fleet goes, then .... who knows? Last year 7-8 of us joined the Port Townsend cruise and had a ball.

The first step in getting organized is to find out who has an RV and who would be interested in land cruising. There are two ways you can do that.

1. Go into your profile on the website, click on interests, and select "RV Travel". profile
2. If you are unable to modify your online profile, contact John Gantz at jfgantz@gmail.com or 508-524-6796.

We'll gather names, RV specs, level of interest, and ideas. Who knows where the road will take us!

Friday Nights Survey Results—What Volunteers Volunteered in Our Voluntary Survey

You may have noticed that we recently fielded a survey looking for volunteers for Friday night dinners through the rest of the year. The response was good -- more than 20 members responded -- and the information is already being put to use for recruitment. We will also have sign-up sheets at the club.

Some things we learned in the survey:

• Half of the respondents have never volunteered for a Friday night before.
• Although most respondents were willing to help in any way, the most popular job was greeting, the least popular was cleanup.
• The most popular food preference was Mexican, followed by Italian food, then grilled brats and burgers. There was also strong support for Costo and takeout choices.
• For those willing to prepare food, the number one choice was usually a specialty, followed by grilling, then takeout.
• In short, we are going to have some excellent Friday Night meals!

The Fleet Report—Time to Update the Squadron List

It is time to start thinking about the 2021 Cruise year. Before we start a new season, please take a look at your website profile information and make sure that the information about your boat is up to date. Go to the KCYC website and click on your profile found in the upper right hand corner.

1. If you are a boat owner, please click the interest box that identifies you as member owning a boat. This information will make sure that you receive all of the cruise information emails. Select your profile.
2. Review the information about your boat in your profile and make sure it is correct.
3. If you no longer own a boat, please remove your information from the list.

• Dory Kutz- beloved dog of Janice and David Kutz and a long time cruiser passed away.
• Jerry Kirschner is recovering from shoulder replacement surgery.
• John and Shelley Gantz are recovering from knee replacement surgery (John) and back surgery (Shelley).
• Colleen Cary is doing well.
• Debbie Tyler is improving from hand surgery and complications.
• Congratulations to Kathy Showman on her retirement.

The Second Annual Whiskey Tasting—November 13th

Christmas at the Dock—December 5th

There is a rumor that the Grinch hid the Christmas lights at the Port this year. While there is some truth to that rumor, the KCYC fleet is going to help fill the void. The plan is to move our boats to the guest dock on Saturday, December 5th. 

We need to make a special effort to get our lights out and decorate the boats. KCYC has reserved slips for Saturday night on the guest dock. There will be prizes for the most lights and the best decorated boat, and Joseph is planning a dinghy activity. We will celebrate the season on our boats in a Covid compliant way—we'll show the Grinch who's boss!

Most of you probably know that in order to be open, we must be serving hot food served to the table, like a restaurant, as bars are still restrained from operations. A recent survey showed many of you willing to help host/prepare food for a Friday night, or assist by setting up, serving to the tables, and cleaning up.  THANK YOU  Shelley Gantz will be contacting you to work on our December line up.

• Oct 2^nd We had an Octoberfest celebration where we copied a few ideas from our recent Shilshole Cruise Captains.Thank you again to our chef Joseph Charnes and Patty & Tom Ruge who worked side by side all night.
• Oct 9^th Steve Young and Steve Page, assisted by Gloria & Kim, served up piping hot delicious cheese burgers with BBQ onions and corn on the cob.Yum yum!And again thanks to our helpers Julie and Dave Turner, Kathy Satre and Bill Orr.
• Oct 23^rd Kathy Satre and Bill Orr served up what one our new members said should be called Gunwhale Chili…”because it was loaded to the Gunwales with flavor!”.Thank you to our helpers Shelley and John Gantz, Kim and Steve Page, and Gloria and Steve Young.
