COMMODORE'S CORNER

Kim Francisco-Clark, Commodore

We kicked off summer with one heck of an event! Pancakes, hotdogs, building sailboats, a parade, beer/wine/spirits tent and the icing on the cake, fireworks! What a fun day for our community. A
huge thank you to all our KCYC members that volunteered to make these events successful!

Boating and RV season are in full swing! Port Townsend was quite the kickoff. That is always a well-attended event and so much fun to explore the town and catch up with fellow members. We are looking forward to our Annual Crab Boil, this Sunday. This is a really great event! Thank you to all our “crabbers” and “cookers”! Victoria is just around the corner and is a fun cruise that takes us a bit further than normal. So much to do from High Tea to the Butchart Gardens.

We will be inducting quite a few members at our July meeting, and I couldn’t be more excited to
welcome them to our amazing club.

Thank you to our Social Committee for setting up fun and unique events on Friday nights for all members to attend. Check out our calendar and make sure to RSVP!

Also, as a reminder, we are actively looking for members interested in leading our club for the next term. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact our Nominating Committee:
Sandi Dalgleish
Cheryl Callais
Kim Page
Bill Parnell
Steve Young

Hope to see everyone at our upcoming events and stay safe boating and RV’ing this summer. But most

importantly, have fun with your family and friends making memories.

FLEET REPORT

Port Hudson 2022

Point Hudson, July 2022

Fleet Update for July

What a great crowd we had in Port Townsend at our last Cruise.  Great weather and lots of fun activities - although I think we have outgrown the Marina Room at Point Hudson.  Thanks to Diane Nunez as Cruise Captain and John and Shelley Gantz as Co-Cruise Captains for putting on a great event.  In addition to the normal food and drinks, we toured the Wooden Boat and Maritime Education facility with Noel Hunter (with help) taking the controls of the large ship simulator.  Philip Frankl was the big winner of the “Seek the Unique” scavenger hunt and we all had some fun at Nautical Pictionary on the beach at the RV Park.  It’s a great destination by boat, RV or car and an easy day trip.  Be sure and put it on your calendar for next year.

Next up is Victoria Splash July 29th through Aug 2nd.  Jerry Kirshner is Cruise Captain and has a fun agenda of activities put together.  We have about 18 boats and several car/VRBO attendees registered for the event.  While I believe there are no slips left, there is always room if you want to walk on the ferry boat Coho in Port Angeles and get a hotel or VRBO for accommodations.

After Victoria is Pleasant Harbor on Hood Canal.  We have 16 boats registered, the “Big House” is rented, at least one RV is staying at Dosewallips State Park, and we have a couple of the floating house boats in the marina rented.  Going to be a fun weekend.  We are planning an extra day so Friday Sept 9th through Monday Sept 12th.    Noel Hunter has volunteered to be our Cruise Captain for this event with several folks stepping up to help out / Co-Cruise captain.  I have confirmed the pool will be open as will the Café and other amenities at the Marina.  Plan to fill up your fuel tanks and make the run down Hood Canal to Pleasant Harbor and join the fleet for this event.  RV’s, and coming by car is also an option.

As always, if you want a boat ride to a cruise destination (assuming you have your own accommodations) get in contact with me and I will “hook you up”.

We are working on the 2023 Cruise Calendar.  If you have a destination you are particularly fond of please reach out to any member of the Cruise Committee.   They are:

  • Steve Page
  • Joseph Charnes
  • Steve Young
  • Walter Viereck
  • Chuck Turner

If you would be interested in joining the Cruise Committee and being part of the destination selection process, let me know.

Be Safe and Happy Boating

VICE COMMODORE REPORT

Clubhouse Rentals

Rental activity continues strong! Processes have been streamlined and we are working to accommodate renters who wish to have the cleanup done by others. There will be a charge of $200 (their deposit) and an additional $50 for washing dishes that have been scraped and placed at the triple sink. A new rental brochure is coming out soon.

UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Club Announcement

The Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 19th at 6pm.
Our General Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 21 at 6pm.
Both meetings will be held at the clubhouse. Please check your emails for any up-to-date COVID-related announcements.

Accepting Nominations for Board Leadership

Are you interested in a Board Leadership Position?

As has been true in the past, the open positions include Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Treasurer, Secretary, and Trustee (2 year Term). The current 2 year Trustee, Stan Mack, will continue in his position and the current Commodore will become the Past Commodore.
There is a tradition of flag officers “walking the chairs” meaning that flag officers move through the chairs from Fleet Captain to Commodore in order to maintain continuity and institutional knowledge. Although the tradition stands, it is not absolute and anyone interested should notify the Nominating Committee if they would like to be considered for any office.

Leadership is paramount to the success of the club and each member has the responsibility to help select that leadership and volunteer for a leadership position when ready. With this Call for Nominations, we are asking that each member consider whether this is the year that they will step for a Board Position or provide names of others that they think would be a good fit. Job descriptions and the Bylaws Requirements for officers may be found on the website in the Documents Folder. Please pass your own name or another to a member of the Nominating Committee for consideration. The Nominating Committee will contact each nominated person to offer information concerning the role and the expectations via discussions and job descriptions. If you have questions or would like more information, contact any member of the Nominating Committee.

Remember it is OK to nominate yourself!

Chair, Nominating Committee

RBAW

Hello Boaters,

Great news to share - there are currently 12 Washington State Marine Parks where they will accept buoy fees by phone!

Boaters can now pay moorage fees by phone by using the buoy number and phone number to call to make payment. Previously, boaters at these parks had to go to shore to pay for overnight moorage. Boaters can still register on shore if they prefer.

The Washington State Parks department started this project as a pilot program in Jarrell Cove State Park in 2021 and has now expanded the program to parks in the San Juan Islands and two in Skagit County.

Click the button below to learn more about the program, to include the fee for this service, and to see which marine parks have this capability (spoiler, RBAWs favorite marine park Sucia Island is on the list)!!

Thank you,

RBAW

PAST EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

Kingston 4th of July Celebration 2022

Kingston Cove Yacht Club does it again!
The 4th of July tradition in Kingston continues to be a huge success and the KCYC plays a big part in this tradition!
In addition to our participation in the longest continuously running parade in the United States, KCYC sponsored a full day of family fun at the yacht club and Mike Wallace Park.  All of our KCYC events were well attended (and appreciated):

Pancake Breakfast
Free Hot Dogs for Kids
Build Your Own Sailboat
Beer/Wine/Spirits Tent

So much thanks to our Board Leadership and Volunteers that made these events happen.

Our KCYC activities on this fun day are a significant contribution to the Community. We also generated much needed revenue to fund club needs.

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Member Engagement Committee Goals

Welcome to KCYC Where Everyone Knows Your Name

A goal of the KCYC Member Engagement Committee is to establish an environment “where everyone knows your name.”  One way we accomplish this goal is by scheduling Committee members to promote a positive experience as “Greeters” for Friday Night activities, General Meetings, and events that are open to the public.

The Greeter will welcome current members, guests, and walk-in visitors, provide name tags when required, introduce new or potential members to current members, answer questions, provide information on KCYC or applications when requested….generally ensure that people feel welcomed.

At times you may see two members at the front desk. The Volunteer who has signed up to check-in members and the Membership Greeter.  Both are doing important work to make KCYC the Best Little Yacht Club in the Salish Sea!!

The New Member Sponsor - Volunteer for this Critical Role

Spring and Summer are a traditional time for new members to join KCYC. In the last month alone, we received 5 new applications! This year the Member Engagement Committee introduced a New Member Sponsor Program to welcome and support potential and new members. At the last General Meeting, the Committee shared the following diagram that illustrates the overall process and both the sponsor and new member responsibilities.

This is a critical role that supports the club’s growth and success. Please consider becoming a sponsor. If you are interested or have questions or comments, please contact Diane Nunez at 206-714-9293.
