Board Decisions in Light of Coronavirus—A Letter from the Commodore

Published on 3/11/2020

March 11, 2020

Dear Members

As you may be aware, we recently cancelled the Friday night Bingo event. This was out of an abundance of caution until the Board could meet and decide on an appropriate course of action for the next several weeks. First and foremost, we want each of you to protect yourselves during the corona virus outbreak. Pay attention to the advice that is being provided from the many sources – CDC, Washington State, Kitsap County, as well as other health provider networks.

In addition to our individual responsibilities, we, as a group, have a commitment to be good citizens of our community, ensuring we are conducting our fun and business in a safe manner. In consideration of that, the Board has decided to close the bar on Friday nights in March; the St. Paddy’s Day Dinner has been postponed; and the following club activities have been cancelled: March 19 – KCYC General Meeting and March 27 – Friday Night Meatloaf Contest. The March 20-22 Poulsbo Cruise will still go on! These decisions were not made lightly and were driven by the guidance that is currently publicly available. We are continuing to err on the side of caution. The Board will continue to monitor the situation, and make future recommendations, all with the goal of getting our club back to normal operations as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

In spite of these decisions, I want you to know KCYC is alive, well and very active. If you are not aware, much of the club work happens in small gatherings, committees and individual efforts. As I write this, the KCYC memorial walk is being constructed, the 2020 facilities committee is completing a design document, the membership committee is focused on recruitment and value creation, the social committee is planning great events, the Ladies Lunch is being planned, Friday night fun continues to be innovative, and our cruise captains are focused on the next fun voyage while our website team continues to improve our underlying process and web functionality.

So, what’s next?
• We will continue to use appropriate cleaning and sanitization. For our members and or renters, we will be enhancing the availability of hand sanitizer at the club and doubling down on the sanitization of surfaces at the facility after use.
• We will continue to ensure we are leveraging Kitsap County Health recommendations.
• We will evaluate additional facility refurbishment and project activities that can take advantage of the facility’s reduced use.

All of the aforementioned activities, committees, and project work at KCYC will continue at its normal pace through March. Stay tuned as we move forward through this journey together. We will provide an update after the next Board meeting, this coming Tuesday.
