Commodore 2021-2022

A Message from our NEW Commodore

I am very excited to be representing our members and yacht club in the coming year. Thank you to our members for having faith in myself and the current board. A huge thank you to Sandi and the previous board for everything they accomplished in the past year. It’s so impressive the number of new members that joined our club during the challenges we faced over the past year and a half.

A little bit about myself and my family. My husband, Tony, Past Commodore, and myself own The Kingston Ale House. We’ve enjoyed being a part of our community and stay involved in several organizations like the Kathleen Sutton Fund, Kingston Fourth of July, and many others. We have a second home in Carefree, Arizona, where Tony loves to soak up the sun. He’s able to spend quite a bit of time there, as he works from home as Technical Program Manager for UnifyCloud. We love boating and have had boats since 2000. We currently have a Bayliner 340, the “Southern Jewelle”, named after my beautiful mother-in-law, Marjorie Jewelle. We look forward to the cruising season in 2022! We have one daughter, Morgan, who works for Amazon Web Services as a Senior Manager, PNW, Enterprise Sales. She lives in Lake Forest Park with our funny and darling grandson, Peyton, who is in 4th grade this year. Peyton loves sailing every summer with Sail Kingston Cove.

Thank you to everyone that helped make the Commodores Ball an amazing evening! Gloria & Steve Young for the decorations, flowers, and setup! Karen & Neil Parker for the decorations, setup, and check in! Karen & Pete Waite for helping Darcy with glassware and the music! Jerry Andrews for clean up! Sandi & Ken for the amazing menu, setup and decorations! And finally, to The Kingston Ale House crew, Andy, Harrison, Trevor, Gianni, Susan and Barb for a wonderful meal!

We have some great events coming up for the remainder of this year, so don’t miss out! Halloween/Day of the Dead should be full of funny bones, frightful moments, witches brew, and ghoulish tasty bites! November is our annual Family Turkey Dinner, which is always a treat and a great time to reflect on our blessings, family, and friendships. Tony will be thankful for the 3 rd Annual Whiskey tasting in November! And then there is December….so much fun to be had by all!

Here’s to finishing out 2021 with laughter, love, family, and friends!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Social Committee Report

After a madhouse October we are heading into a chockablock November. October started with the Foul Weather Bluff Regatta (technically not a social event, but …), then Oktoberfest, which brought in more than 50 members and guests, then a “leftovers” night that hosted two dozen scavengers, the Commodore’s Ball, and finally Halloween/Dia De los Muertos.

November and December? Let’s talk brats and barbecue (November 5th), turkey at the General Meeting, and chili cookoff on tree-lighting-Santa-dinghy December 4th. Maybe even a cookie and a gift exchange. So, keep checking the event calendar.

Capture Those Lessons Learned
As you are out boating this year, keep in mind the lessons you learn. We have lots of opportunities to share our lessons learned with the rest of the club.

Member Communication

Below are some highlights from the RBAW Communication. For full text, please go to: Legislative Issues.

Watercraft Excise Tax Depreciation Schedule

As most of you are aware, we annually pay a percentage of the value of our boat in a Watercraft Excise Tax (WET) when we renew our vessel registration. The Dept. of Revenue (DOR) has the ability to review this depreciation schedule annually but have not done so since 2010. This year they are working on changes for our 2022 WET.

Mandatory Personal Flotation Devices Again in the Legislative Spotlight
Continuing a discussion from last legislative session, there have been several meetings where the topic centered on possible legislation in the 2022 session addressing mandatory wearing of life jackets on certain vessels.

Port of Port Townsend Will Be Recycling Derelict Boats
A new pilot program is being assigned to the Port of Port Townsend that will be recycling derelict boats. Already there are ten boats awaiting tearing down and recycling.

Another Way to Donate to the RBAW Marine Parks Conservancy?
A potential 2022 legislative item RBAW is exploring is working with DOR so when you renew your vessel registration online, you can donate to a charitable cause ie. our own RBAW Marine Parks Conservancy.

On the Passing of Susan Moses

We are sad to let you know one of our Charter Life Members has passed away. Susan Moses passed away from a heart attack on October 17th 2021 after a 2 year battle with cancer, she was 72. Susan and Bill were part of the original Charter which started our Kingston Cove Yacht Club. She is also the daughter of Past Commodore Elmer Martens, 1980 - 1981 and Jackie Martens (Our first Woman Commodore) 1884-1985. Susan and Bill flew from Arizona to Kingston for our 50th KCYC Anniversary gathering. They hadn’t been back for a few years. Bill and Susan were always there to help support the club from day 1 and were involved with many community activities which are still being supported by the Yacht Club today. She was a wonderful friend and will be dearly missed.

October Genl Meeting Change of Watch 2021

Change of Watch

The October General Meeting is always a very special time, filled with the ritual ceremony of inducting our new Board officers; awarding special recognition to special members; and reflecting on the year that was and looking forward to the year ahead.  Tom Pickens, a long time member and past Commodore, led the Induction Ceremony, welcoming all of our new officers to their positions.

In addition to the induction of officers, three long standing club awards were given out: The Nels Anderson Memorial Distinguished Service Award; the Boating Family of the Year Award; and the Sandbar Award. To read more about these awards and recipients, go to our News page:  Change of Watch 2021

  • Nels Anderson Memorial Distinguished Service Award 2021 —John & Shelley Gantz
The NELS ANDERSON MEMORIAL DISTINBUISHED SERVICE AWARD was established in 1976. It is the highest honor that is bestowed on a member of the Kingston cove Yacht Club. This award is presented by the Commodore to an individual(s) who has shown by their actions that they have, indeed, gone the extra mile.
  • Boating Family of the Year—Nancy Langwith & Jerry Kirschner
The Boating Family of the year award was a slam dunk this year, awarded to a couple for not only cruising their boat but also for how they helped others.
  • 2021 Sandbar Award—Bob Mehm & Doreen Jordan
Every year during the Fleet activities we keep our eyes open for potential candidates for actions that are notable and/or out of the ordinary. This can range from running aground, losing a dinghy, falling in or forgetting to bring food on a cruise. This year one couple, or captain, really stood out.

Commodore's Ball 2021

KCYC Commodore's Ball
Saturday, October 23rd

Well, we may not have twinkling lights in the night sky, but the club was transformed for an evening to remember. Hosted by Sandi & Ken Dalgleish, we enjoyed an evening inspired from the years they spent on the Chesapeake Bay. Gloria Young and Karen Parker provided beautiful club and table decorations to set a perfect scene.

With blues inspired background music, Chef Andy prepared a Chesapeake themed 5 course meal featuring blue crab throughout. Who can prepare fish for so many people and have it cooked perfectly?!? Not to mention the Kabuto pork which was also wonderful. The menu was topped off with famous Smith Island 7 layer cake…indeed famous….look it up. All was impeccably served by the Ale House team.

This was all followed by hours of dancing to Silver City Six….and the dance floor was full! Everything was truly fantastic! Our thanks to all those who made such a special evening possible.
