COMMODORE'S CORNER

Commodore 2023-24 Rita Osborn

The 4th of July is already a memory, but what an extraordinary memory it is.

From the Pancake Breakfast, to the Parade, to the Hot Dogs, and finally the Beer Tent and incredible fireworks show, it was a smashing success. I am so proud to be the Commodore of a membership that continues to step up and get the job done with such style and grace.

There is no way I can name all of you who participated without forgetting someone, so to all the Chairmen, Volunteers and Board Members who gave it your all a huge THANK YOU.

As we move on from July 4th we have many events and cruises planned. In addition to the fun events we have planned, there is an important motion that is going to be made at the next General Meeting. This motion was sent our to all of you in an email on July 9th. The motion is to introduce a new membership category specifically designed for young people between the ages of 13 -20 to be known as Junior Members.

This is an idea that was set in motion during the development of the Strategic Plan in 2019. Unfortunately, the Pandemic and other issues, took priority, until now. I feel like this is a perfect time to implement a Junior Membership into the Club. We have grown over the past two years, and many of our members are younger and enthusiastic about sailing and power boating. Our financial health is excellent, and inviting a younger, youth membership will continue to add vitality to the membership with little drain on finances or people.

The addition of Junior Members between the ages of 13 and 20 will not interfere with or inhibit our events or activities within the Club. In fact, the opposite is true. Junior Members will be a resource for the adult members, and also give adult members an opportunity to guide and teach skills to these future adult members. The Junior Members will only have use of the Clubhouse during designated times, and of course will not be allowed to participate in events that would constitute a violation of Washington State liquor laws.  The email you received should answer all of your questions, but feel free to text or call me to discuss before the next General Meeting.

Other important Club business for all of you to be mindful of is the nominating committee, which has met and is putting together a slate of officers for next years Board. This is the time to consider what you may be able to contribute to KCYC. Please let the members of the nominating committee know if you are interested in serving.

So let the fun continue into as we battle the hot summer days, and I mean that, it is very warm for the Pacific Northwest even for this former Hawaii Resident. Keep cool, come down to the club on Friday nights and enjoy a cold beer or beverage, and sit on the deck where there is usually a breeze. I WILL SEE YOU THERE! A HUI HOU!

Hi all, The turn of the seasons found KCYC floating along nicely on budget. June was a slow month for the bar and events, but costs were down more than revenue. Year to date we are 10% above on revenue, and thanks to interest payments, 25% above on net income. Yes, July' 4th's activities will give us a big jump in revenue, but until all the expenses are tallied I can't really tell you how we did. But I can tell you this. On the Monday after the Fourth, your treasurer lugged a bunch of cash to the bank. How much? This much: if it were all one dollar bills piled up, the stack would be taller than Robin Salthouse!

FLEET REPORT

Gig_Harbor_Marina.jpg
July is off to a busy start. The weekend of the 12th is our Gig Harbor Cruise followed by a day cruise to the Mariner’s game on the 24th. If you are interested in taking your boat to Bell Harbor Marina for the game let the Fleet Captain know ASAP.  Then, at the end of the month is the cruise to Victoria BC. We still need a Cruise Captain for that trip. Let the Fleet Captain know if you will be willing to serve as Cruise Captains for the cruise. Special thanks to Mike Reed for setting up the salmon catching seminar last month.
See you on the water!

Over Labor Day Weekend, the fleet is headed to Pleasant Harbor.  There is a group looking to rent the Big House in Pleasant Harbor for the cruise August 30 - September 2. They are looking for one more couple to join them. Contact the Fleet Captain if you are interested:  Fleetcaptain@kcyc.org.

Boat Safety
We had a great Man Overboard (MOB) session and discussion for boater education in the Marina Room at Point Hudson during our cruise to Port Townsend.  Contact me if anyone wants a vessel safety check. It’s always good to ensure boats have the proper safety equipment and are adhering to state and federal regulations.
That all for now…except that the First Aid Kit can now be found on top of the ADP on the wall.  Jimmy

PORT  WATCH

port-of-kingston.png

Welcome to the Port Watch, our monthly article highlighting issues and activities at the Port.

Sometimes one hears a rumor or two floating around that by accident or by design starts to get folks riled up. How riled, well depends on how hot it is and if you have air conditioning. Summers are like that, with more ER visits than any other time of the year.

Not to add to the scuttlebutt being passed round, I’m not going to detail what's out there right now, but I’ve confirmed from an extremely reliable source that there are no new conversations about additional Port development, and no formal workshops or closed door sessions. It’s true that over the months/years a number of topics float between the various public works custodians, but it takes “like forever” to get anything actually started.

Case in point, although it has nothing to do with the recent rumors, where in the hell is the new public restrooms that are part of the Port's 2023-2028 master plan that have been touted? The last I heard was that construction was going to start this summer. I haven’t seen anything about the status of this project. So much for GANTT chart critical path planning and execution.

Interested in a Board Leadership Position?

Club leadership is critical to our ability to continue to thrive and grow…and to have fun! What better way to contribute your skills!

We need all of you to help us identify our next set of leaders. You are invited to step up and volunteer for a leadership position if you feel ready. And you can provide names of others that you think would be a good fit. Please pass your own name or another to a member of the Nominating Committee for consideration.

The Nominating Committee will contact each nominated person to offer information concerning the role and the expectations via discussions and the job descriptions.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact any member of the Nominating Committee.

The club bylaws specify the steps the Nominating Committee must follow and the timing for each step.  The process is outlined below.

  • June - The Nominating Committee is formed by the Commodore (or delegate) and is chaired by immediate Past Commodore.   This committee consists of four or five members representing a cross section of the Club, including one or two Past Commodores, and at least one boating member and one social member.
  • July & August - A call for candidates for open positions and a list of committee members shall be published in the July & August Bosun’s Pipe. Members of the Committee shall not be eligible for any open position.
    • Flag Officers:  The committee will confirm with the Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, and Fleet captain willingness to accept nomination to the next Flag officer rank in succession and place them in nomination for the next term. In the event a flag officer succession cannot be implemented, nominations will be made for those positions.
    • Trustees: The Committee shall nominate at least one (1) voting member to the elective positions of First Year Trustee (two-year position), Secretary, and Treasurer.
  • September Annual Meeting – Officers and Trustees Elections
The list of candidates shall be reported in the September issue of the Bosun’s Pipe, at least ten (10) days prior to the election of officers.  Nominations can also be made from the floor at the Sept Annual Meeting.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

June was a busy month with cruises for the Club! So the Clubhouse was fairly quiet, with some “leftover night” events, and unexpected cancellations of “fun stuff” because… you know. Cooties. But enough about that! Onwards and upwards  Summer is in full swing, crab season and some fishing is open, even if it seems like you need a separate CLASS to figure out the WA Fish and Wildlife regulations. They get more complex every year!

After surviving the volunteer madness of 4th of July activities, we’re all took a breath of relief on July 5th at an informal “Bring your own meat for the grill” night at the Club. Coming up we’ve got another cruise (Gig Harbor)! So the next BIG event planned at the Clubhouse is our annual Crab Feast on SUNDAY, July 21st, headed up by Cheryl “Crablais” Callais. If you are able to go out crabbing this Sunday or Monday and can donate crab, please let her know ASAP. Call, text, or email: cherylcallais@msn.com, or ‭(360) 297-8627‬.

Hawaiian Pub Crawl is BACK! Grab your best tourist attire and accessories, and join Julie Turner and Rick Eveleth on July 27th at the club to head out on the streets of Kingston and hit up some pubs and games.  I am looking for someone to host Burgers and hopefully some music in August - August 23rd or 24th- please let me know!  Text, email or call me.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Community

Outreach

Special thanks to all those who spent the Fourth of July making it an amazing day for everyone!  Special adulation for Robin Salthouse for the parade float decorating, treat buying, and general enthusiasm when certain people like me complain about parades.  It's unfair to leave out Robin's lesser half, Rob (or is that just half of Robin?) who managed to
coordinate a successful Sharenet Food Drive while still celebrating election day in the UK! We raised funds equating to nearly $725 in food. ShareNet is feeding between 30 and 60 families a week and is seeing a growing demand so their need continues. As a committee we will continue to discuss our opportunities to assist these and other wonderful organizations in our community.  Join us!

Speaking of which, on Friday July 12, 2024, we are serving Kingston Care's community meal.  There may yet be another chance to volunteer so have a look (you know where)! Finally, and on a really really sad note, our beloved Beth Layton has sold her home and is leaving for North Carolina this month. So if you have the chance, thank her and wish her well.

Summer Food Drive Results

The results are in!  The Summer Food Drive for ShareNet, netted (!) 221 lb of food and $413 in cash.  Not quite up to the 2023 Holiday Food Drive but still a great result. So thanks to everyone who contributed.

A lot of the cash came from "tips" at the Beer Tent so thanks for Shelly and John Gantz, not only for all their efforts at the Beer Tent but also for the innovative fund raising method.  Just FYI, cash is great for Sharenet. For every dollar donated they are able to leverage $1.75 in food. So, if I can do the math, our contribution was worth nearly $725 in food.

Also, ShareNet is feeding between 30 and 60 families a week and is seeing a growing demand so their need continues.

Again, thanks to everyone who contributed.  Rob Salthouse
2021 Pancake Breakfast 26
Kingston Community Pancake Breakfast

We don't have all the information yet, but about 500 people were served a pancake breakfast at the clubhouse.  Led by Kirsten Jewell, a large group of volunteers started early in the morning to decorate and prepare for the onslaught of guests.  It is a wonderful tradition that KCYC plans to continue for a long time to come.
2021 Hotdogs Boats Beer 2
Kingston Community Hotdog Giveaway

Last but not least, let's give a big round of applause to Joseph Charnes who annually serves free hotdogs to the children (and some adults) of Kingston.  It is a great way to get the residents of Kingston to recognize the role of the yacht club in the community.  Many thanks to Joseph and his many volunteers.

Kingston July 4th Parade Was a Blast!

KCYC member volunteers and friends came through again to let Kingston know we care about and support our community. Our “LoveBoat” themed float, supplied by Loretta and David Jones, had hearts representing the groups the club supports. With Gloria and Steve’s sound system help, the “Love Boat” television program theme song repeated throughout the parade while KCYC members and friends handed out 800 Tootsie Roll Pops to children along the route. Gloria and Steve’s bubble machine and guns were a big hit with the crowd. A huge thank you to Ellen who ran to the store at the last minute for water and dish detergent to make the bubble solution I forgot. Commodore Rita and Vice-Commodore Chuck waved like professionals. This event is a great way to meet members, and for new members to start volunteering. Join the Community Engagement committee and help plan the 2025 parade float.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS

membership.jpg
A hearty welcome to Tina Valdez!!

Tina met some KCYC members at the Pirate Festival and became interested in the club at that time. She would like to make friends and be involved with the community, and what better way than to join KCYC?

Tina moved here in May. She is a promotional products consultant. She enjoys gardening, traveling, her grandson, and cooking. Tina’s son works for the ferry system!

Even though she is not yet involved in other organizations, she was a tourism ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce in California before coming up here. Additionally, she worked for the CBYC in San Pedro promoting items for the ship’s store (20 Yrs.) Tina is willing to help set up, and tear down after events.

Thank you Dawn Wiser for bringing Tina to us!

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The! Membership Team is actively recruiting new members. As in any organization our Club gains and loses members each year.  To maintain a membership number that allows KCYC to pay the bills, make improvements to the Club House and provide events and activities at lower costs, we need to consistently add new members. This year we have added seven new members.
The best way to recruit new members is through membership referrals. The following members referring new members are: John Gitchel, Cecile Schwedes, and  Terry and Denise Campbell.  In addition Tina Valdez was recruited through a Membership booth at the Pirate Festival.  At the same event we met several potential members. ( I tried the 4th of July Beer Tent—but it was a bust.)
We all need to be open to adding new members to keep KCYC a thriving Club!
Thanks to all the members who refer and recruit new members!!

  • The Pub Crawl has been rescheduled for July 21st!!  Dig out your best and most outrageous Hawaiian Tourist outfit and get ready for the Great Aloha Pub Crawl in Kingston. The fun starts at the clubhouse at 2 pm. Don't be late as we'll be passing out the map and instruc6ons for the afternoon of fun. Visits have been arranged at 4 restaurants to eat, drink, and play games with your friends. There will be a Best Costume contest and other fun games where you can win fabulous prizes. Thank you to Julie Turner and Rick Eveleth for organizing the fun!
  • The Membership Engagement Committee will be taking on the Sunshine and Cloud Card program. Lorie Bischoff has kindly volunteered to coordinate this effort. Please send no6fica6ons regarding who might need encouragement, congratula6ons, or sympathy to Lorie Bischoff at soulfulstuff4u@yahoo.com.
  • The Community Engagement Committee is hosting the Kingston Community Dinner on Friday, July 12 at Village Green Community Center, 5-6:30 pm. We would like to extend an invitaton to KCYC club members to volunteer to help with this event.
