COMMODORE'S CORNER

Commodore 2023-24 Rita Osborn

The time is just flying by, and by the time you read this it will be after the Luau. I know that Sandi and Ken will have given it their all, and the Ranger Tug guests, and our membership will have had a great time. Mahalo Ken and Sandi and master pig roasters and chefs extraordinaire Danial and Stephen.  also many thanks to all the volunteers who made this event work in spite of the Port’s complications and last minute changes. Being able to adapt and make things happen are a testament to your dedication to the Club and its members.

Last month I put out the idea that the club should entertain a motion to add a new class of membership to our current membership structure. This being a Junior Membership for kids between the ages of 13 to 20. This is an idea that was set in motion during the development of the Strategic Plan in 2019. Unfortunately, the Pandemic and other issues, took priority, until now. I feel like this is a perfect time to implement a Junior Membership into the Club. We have grown over the past two years, and many of our members are younger and enthusiastic about sailing and power boating. Our financial health is excellent, and inviting a younger, youth membership will continue to add vitality to the membership with little drain on finances or people.

Before the Board of Trustees will approve this change, I have been asked to write a Business Plan that outlines the structure of the Junior Membership and includes advantages and any risks to the organization by including these younger members. I am in the process of writing this document, and hopefully it will be ready for presentation to the Board soon. Stay tuned for more information.

Other important Club business for all of you to be mindful of is the nominating committee, which has met and is putting together a slate of officers for next years Board. This is the time to consider what you may be able to contribute to KCYC. Please let the members of the nominating committee know if you are interested in serving.

Please check the website for activities and cruises that are upcoming and be sure to come down on Friday nights for a cold beer or beverage of your choice, while sitting on the deck where there is usually a breeze. I WILL SEE YOU THERE! A HUI HOU!

TREASURER REPORT

What a Difference a Day Makes. Namely the extra day of July 4th beer tent operation that we had last year but not this year. In short, the club made 10% more than the one-day beer tent in 2022, but only 75% of the two-day beer tent in 2023. Boo hoo. On the other hand, we made over $8K net income for the month, and are right about on plan for the year. What's more, we are coming close to $150K in the bank. Not so boo hoo. Let's have a luau to celebrate.

FLEET REPORT

Pleasant Harbor Cruise 2019
The fleet had a busy last few weeks with multiple events and cruises. We had a July cruise to Gig Harbor which was the first visit by KCYC in years. Greg Wright did a great job as Cruise Captain and there was plenty to see around town. Mike Reed put on a very informative seminar on how to catch salmon which was well attended. A few members took a trip to a Mariners game in Seattle.  Finally, the fleet just completed a great cruise to Victoria BC. Christa Ross did a great job as Cruise Captain and Chuck Turner setup a trip to Queen Victoria Yacht Club for dinner. Next up is a cruise to Pleasant Harbor. Part of that cruise will include a milk carton sailboat race so start saving your milk cartoons for the race. See you out on the water

PORT  WATCH

port-of-kingston.png

Welcome to the Port Watch, our monthly article highlighting issues and activities at the Port.

Last month I ask the question “where the hell is the new public restrooms”. The point of that question was to highlight the fact that, although the Executive Director claims that detailed project GANTT charts are used to track project work, I haven’t found a single one addressing the capital projects in the 2023-2028 master plan.

Well color me surprised, and for what it’s worth, validated in my view that whatever project planning is done, none of it seems to be shared with us. Work started on the new restrooms as we all know, and for those uninformed Port patrons who have parking permits and parked in the work area, SURPRISE!, you car needed to be towed. If they had only shared the project timeline and tasks, we could have gladly helped by not parking in that area.

So what is next—who knows as the administration and commissioners don’t seem to understand simple communications. What is next for the rest of us, how about a recall petition for a commissioner who feels communicating with us is a violation of his/her obligation. Maybe we can get someone who will tell us what the heck is going on.

Club leadership is critical to our ability to continue to thrive and grow…and to have fun! What better way to contribute your skills!

We need all of you to help us identify our next set of leaders. You are invited to step up and volunteer for a leadership position if you feel ready. And you can provide names of others that you think would be a good fit. Please pass your own name or another to a member of the Nominating Committee for consideration.

The Nominating Committee will contact each nominated person to offer information concerning the role and the expectations via discussions and the job descriptions.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact any member of the Nominating Committee.

The club bylaws specify the steps the Nominating Committee must follow and the timing for each step.  The process is outlined below.

  • June - The Nominating Committee is formed by the Commodore (or delegate) and is chaired by immediate Past Commodore.   This committee consists of four or five members representing a cross section of the Club, including one or two Past Commodores, and at least one boating member and one social member.
  • July & August - A call for candidates for open positions and a list of committee members shall be published in the July & August Bosun’s Pipe. Members of the Committee shall not be eligible for any open position.
    • Flag Officers:  The committee will confirm with the Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, and Fleet captain willingness to accept nomination to the next Flag officer rank in succession and place them in nomination for the next term. In the event a flag officer succession cannot be implemented, nominations will be made for those positions.
    • Trustees: The Committee shall nominate at least one (1) voting member to the elective positions of First Year Trustee (two-year position), Secretary, and Treasurer.
  • September Annual Meeting – Officers and Trustees Elections
The list of candidates shall be reported in the September issue of the Bosun’s Pipe, at least ten (10) days prior to the election of officers.  Nominations can also be made from the floor at the Sept Annual Meeting.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

And just like that, summer is halfway over! It’s hard to believe how quickly July zoomed past.  A bunch of you enjoyed cruise to the beautiful Gig Harbor, while other members helped with Kingston Community Meal. We all feasted on Crab - Cheryl outdid herself as usual, and the crabbers came through with mountains of crab, hallelujah!

Some of us went on the Fleet Trip to the Marines Game. What a treat, to arrive in style to Bell Harbor, wave your hand vaguely and say: Oh, we just sailed in for the game….The Aloha Pub Crawl roared back to life with gusto! Great time was had by all.

What’s next? This weekend, our annual Luau party is not to be missed! We’ve had a few cancellations, so you can probably still get in, just contact Sandi Dalgleish or Simona Dedek to get a seat. Please note the change of location to the Clubhouse, from the Marina Park, due to a POK scheduling conflict. On August 23rd, Nancy Langwith will be hosting her “Famous Coddled Brats”, and we will play some silly silly games that everyone will doubtlessly enjoy, as an “almost end of summer” party. It’s open for registrations now. The following weekend is ALREADY Labor Day! Hope to see many of you in Pleasant Harbor for our annual Labor Day Cruise festivities.

As always, keep your eyes on the website calendar for the latest updates, and see you around!  Text, email or call me with any ideas and suggestions for the fall - we NEED A HOST for our Halloween Party! Shelley and John will be out of town. Either Friday, October 25th, or Saturday,October 26th.
