COMMODORE'S CORNER

Commodore 2023-24 Rita Osborn

Thank you all for supporting my term as your Commodore. It has been a good year, with moderate growth and accomplishments. You made that possible.

Without any doubt this Board has worked hard to implement the tasks set out before them, and I said when I started that I would only be as good as the people who surrounded me, and that is true, so thank you Board Members for being there and doing the work.

The Facilities Design Document, which spells out what improvements should be prioritized and made to our space was updated, and the tasks that were implemented resulted in an aesthetically pleasing flooring installation, among many other things that have improved our space. Thank you Chuck Turner for your lead on all these improvements.

Ed Fernandez, made our cruises some of the most memorable, and Shelley Gantz implemented her duties as Rear Commodore at the bar with dedication and perseverance. John Gantz brought his usual humor to the financial side of things, and Karen never failed to make sure our minutes were accurate and new applications were processed. Diane and Jim both served as Trustees, with Diane concentrating on membership and Jim working on the By-laws. Art Hammon, our immediate Past Commodore , was there to advise and assist, not only me, but all. A big Thank You to all of you!

And now we turn the page and offer our support and congratulations to the new Board who will continue the tradition of making this the Best Little Yacht Club in Washington State.

I certainly can not end this, my last article, without thanking not only those mentioned above, but those who served as Chairmen and volunteers. Without your enthusiastic support and willingness to serve all the functions and events would not have happened. Too many to list, but thank you, thank you, Simona Robin, Julie, Robin, Rob, Kirsten, Cheryl, Joseph, Mike Brooks, Steve Young,Gloria, Mark, to name a few, and all the rest who served as Cruise Captains, Bar Workers, Kitchen Helpers on clean up and serving, and everyone who attended and supported all of these members. You know who you are.

I challenge all of you to stay involved and stay active and volunteer. It is a great feeling and makes the club work for all. A hui Hou and see you at the Commodore’s Ball.

As my term as Rear Commodore comes to an end, I would like all of the people who volunteered on the 4th of July as well as the backup bartenders at General Meetings. It’s been my pleasure to have worked so closely with Darcy since last October - she rocks! I would also like to extend a big thank you to Lon Hayne, who is stepping up as your new Rear Commodore - let’s all support him in any way we can.

The Foulweather Bluff race weekend was a busy one, with the bar making nearly $2000. Darcy and I served up over 30 Dark and Stormys on Saturday alone, as well as a LOT of beer, a moderate amount of wine, a few G&Ts, and even a handful of Old Fashioneds. Joseph’s cheeseburgers were a big hit on Friday for club members and visiting sailors alike. We’re hoping for some clearer communication on food expectations for the day of the race in 2025.

Ah, so many exciting things in the month of September....change of seasons, football, daylight savings time, a KCYC ice machine fix, and great fishing. You know what's NOT exciting? This month's KCYC financial report! Both monthly revenue and expenses were exactly at plan. Year-to-date revenue is at plan, and you need to squint to see the difference in year-to-date expenses and plan. ZZZZZZ, I say, ZZZZZZ.  I'll need some cayenne - no, habanero - pepper to spice up my general meeting monologue.

FLEET REPORT

poulsbo.jpg
We have one last cruise for the season and that is the annual Poulsbo Cruise where we will feature a Cruise Captain Appreciation night at Western Red Brewery on Jensen Way in Poulsbo. It is just a block up from the Poulsbo waterfront so easy to get to. Our Cruise Captains have done an amazing job this year setting up and executing each cruise so this is our chance to show them we appreciate their efforts. Sign up on the website for the dinner whether you cruise to Poulsbo or choose to drive for the event.

Jim Diianni will be taking over as Fleet Captain this month so this will be my last Bosun Pipe as Fleet Captain. It was a fun year and I look forward to what Jimmie has to bring for next year!!

BOAT SAFETY & EDUCATION

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

  • Friday, September 13th “Paint and Sip” with artist Frida Haas at the clubhouse was well attended.  The amount of sheer talent our members revealed under Frida’s expert tutelage is astonishing! If anyone wants to step up to lead this event for next year, let me know and we can get it “on the books”. Frida needs a lot of lead time, due to her obvious popularity. Thank you Sonya Bennett for hosting!

  • We welcomed Tollycraft boat club for their annual cruise to Kingston the following weekend.  After a fun meet and mingle at the Clubhouse on Friday night, Saturday night brought us the now annual Whiskey Tasting and Western Dinner, with our master of the meats John Gitchel’s barbecued ribs. Thank you Art Hammon for making this an annual tradition!

  • As we rolled into October, the Foulweather Bluff Regatta was back again - with an excellent burger dinner on Friday night, hosted by Joseph Charnes. Joseph’s freshly ground burgers he sources from a meat shop in Bremerton never disappoint! And he even made fresh potato salad. With over 30 of our members mingling with over 30 sailors, we had a full house. On Saturday, Joseph held down the fort at the clubhouse, sending sailors out with early fresh coffee, and Shelley opened the bar in the afternoon for their return.

  • Next up - Commodore’s Ball on October 19th, right after the Change of Watch! I’m excited to snap pictures of some snappy dressers, here’s hoping for great dress-up participation! There are a few spots left if you haven't signed up.

  • On Friday, October 25 we’ll have an “Almost Halloween” Social. Come on down, bring a fun dish (there will be prizes for most creative), and feel free to dress up, or not. Robin Lott and Kim Page are your hosts and clubhouse decorators.

  • On November 9th, Walter and Karen Viereck will host a Fall Dance Party. We’ve booked a DJ, and we’ll be serving some yummy fall dishes - soups and bread, and of course dessert. Sign ups are open now, come and dance the night away!

  • WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A HOST OR A GROUP OF YOU TO TAKE ON NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY! The band has been booked. What are you waiting for??? Text, email or call me with any ideas and suggestions for winter and early spring events - looks like you’re stuck with this Social Chihuahua for another year!

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS

  • Please welcome Jim Dettman and Carol Seng! They have applied to KCYC to meet new friends and socialize. Jim and Carol moved here on July 2nd, 2024 to retire near the water.  Carol is currently working part time at the wine bar, having retired from event planning in the hospitality industry. Jim is a retired Army Colonel. They are interested in Golf, Wine tasting, reading, family, and friends. Jim and Carol are willing to help plan parties and events and clean up/set up for meetings.
  • Please also welcome new applicants, Jeff and Sandra Kenderdine! They are new to Washington and are joining KCYC to meet new people, and give back to the community. They have been looking for that “small town feel” while still being closer to their son who lives in Tacoma.  Sandra is a retired teacher, and Jeff is retired from NPO fundraising. Both he and Sandra enjoy fishing, hiking and meeting new friends. They would like to help set up and/or tear down after club events, and assist on the club’s website! They are also ready to volunteer for the ship’s store.

Let’s welcome Jim, Carol, Jeff and Sandra!!

WEBMASTER TIPS

Events on our website has just been updated in September and visually, they look a lot nicer.  In a nutshell, events have the same information but looks updated and cleaner aesthetically.

  • Registration is on fewer pages and presents people and activities on the same page for simplification. A more streamline approach for multple activities and waivers has been implemented so it is easier to accomplish the registration process for a big event.
  • There are some icons that replace buttons:
  • There are some updates on the event calendar that will show if an event is full or waitlisted – pretty cool.

  • The biggest change I think you will see is that the registration information is starting on the same page as the event and that is where you’ll find the RSVP and/or Volunteer button.

If you have questions, feel free to email them to me at WebMaster@kcyc.org.
Cheers, Julie
