COMMODORE'S CORNER

Vice_Commodore_2023-24_Chuck_Turner_461595838

Thank you for all the effort and time served by last year’s Board and Committees under Commodore Rita’s leadership. I am very grateful for the fine group of continuing and new Board members for this coming year.

The primary objectives of KCYC are boating and social activities for our members. I will task the Board and myself to maintain focus on our objectives exploring ways to increase value for our members adding to our existing array of events and programs. There are plenty of opportunities for each of you to contribute towards increasing and refreshing our activities this coming year. I ask each member to contemplate this month how you wish to be involved. The possibilities are endless. Some examples include:

  • Host a social event,Volunteer behind the bar assisting Darcy at larger events,
  • Volunteer to help at an event as they come up,
  • Assist in repairs and improvements to our Clubhouse facility,
  • Join one of our standing or ad-hoc committees,
  • Reach out and offer to assist a club officer or committee chair in an area of interest, or at least
  • Be active by attending events and get better acquainted with your fellow members.

Have fun and enjoy the fellowship. Fair winds and following seas.

REAR COMMODORE REPORT

TREASURER REPORT

As the new Rear Commodore, there are no words to express my gratitude for all of the help I've received during my first 3 weeks in the chair. Shelley and John Gantz, Jack Lott, and, of course, Darcy have made my ramp up much smoother than I thought would be possible. I am sure that a few mistakes wait for me out there so I thank you in advance for your patience and help!

Several Bar news items: The Terrazo Pino Gris is no longer available so we have substituted it with a Bernard Griffin Pino Gris. Please provide feedback if it is not up to our standards. We are also carrying an Australian, low calorie and low alcohol Pino Gris called "Pure Bright", from the Yellow Tail vintner. I encourage you to give it a try!

Finally, a reminder that there are non-negotiable rules and regulations from our state regarding operating our bar. Bar hours are fixed. If we open at 5pm and close at 9pm, please don't push the barkeeps to pour an early or late drink. Also, no personal alcohol can be consumed on the property during club functions. The only time outside alcohol can be consumed is if the club is rented. Violation of these rules could result in both fines and suspension of our license. Cheers! Lon Hayne, Rear Commodore

Oddly, October's revenue was way below budget, but then so were expenses. The treasurer has signed up for a cognitive test to see if he can remember why he budgeted October to be twice the average monthly income. Maybe it was because a lot of the Commodore's Ball money was booked in December? The good news? Expectations are low for November, so year-to-date we look OK. Almost the same YTD net income as last October, and $10K more in the bank.  John Gantz, Treasurer

FLEET REPORT

While we did not have many boats turn out for the Poulsbo cruise, we did have a great group of members that showed up for the Cruise Captain Appreciation Dinner at Western Red Brewing in Poulsbo on Saturday, November 2nd. Ed supplied us with a fine selection of dinner items from Chung’s Teriyaki in Poulsbo. The 2024 Cruise Captains were appropriately recognized for their contributions. And, rightly so!!

KCYC member registration is now open for the December Christmas Lighting at the Port of Kingston on the weekend of December 6th, 7th, and 8th. I reserved 11 guest slips at the Port. There will be a boat decorating event on December 7th. Please register by November 22nd so that I can let the Port know who will be bringing their boats over the guest dock for the weekend. Boaters can register for one or two nights between Friday and Saturday of that weekend. Additional activities are in the works so please stay posted.

The 2025 Cruise Schedule is available for download from the KCYC Club Documents. It is not too early to preview the schedule and volunteer as a Cruise Captain for one of the cruises. I would greatly appreciate your help. Let me know if you need access to the document. March 15th has been set aside for the annual KCYC Boater Education day.

PORT  WATCH
One Member's Opinion

port-of-kingston.png

Welcome to the Port Watch, our monthly article highlighting issues and activities at the Port.  This is one man’s view point and may not be the view or opinion of the Kingston Cove Yacht Club or it’s officers.
Well there are a number of things going on at the Port regarding their medium to long term strategic plan. Several club members are reviewing what the Port has published, compiling comments and questions that will be forwarded to the Port. We’ll keep you up to date, and share everything that comes out of the input from all community members. Stay tuned”.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Wow you all sure clean up real nice! The Commodore’s Ball on October 19th did not disappoint, as we said “Arrivederci” to Rita, and “Benvenuto” to Chuck. The multi-talented DJ took some great photos (grab your portraits from the link I emailed a while back, before they disappear!), and played some real toe tapping music well into the evening. Big thank you to all the volunteers who helped Rita execute this big event, especially Cheryl Callais for the decorations design and execution!

On Friday, October 25 we celebrated “Almost Halloween” Social. Being a competitive bunch, as you always are, you took the directions to heart and brought some super creative dishes to share, wow! The turn out exceeded our expectations. Thank you, Robin Lott and Kim Page (and husbands!) for hosting and clubhouse decorations. By the time you read this, our “Fall Dance Party” will probably be over and I'm sure that Walter and Karen Viereck did an amazing job with fall foods AND a DJ.

Remember the November meeting is NOT a potluck, the board will feed all of us! Stay tuned for December holiday events schedule, we’re still finalizing that. Here is some good news - we now have hosts for the New Year’s Eve Party! The band has been booked, so stay tuned and put this into your calendar, it’s going to be a great party, with a later start, so you don’t run out energy before the ball drops at midnight! Text, email or call me with any ideas and suggestions for winter and early spring events. Specifically, I am thinking of…. Baked potato bar… maybe nachos bar…. Grazing table (giant charcuterie), having Frida come for another “Sip and Paint”. I’m hoping some of our “newer” members will have some ideas and want to get involved? Call me or text me!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Boys_Girls_Annual_Toy_Drive_Flyer_2022.jpg
This committee was created to bring KCYC awareness into the community and Community awareness into KCYC. Mark Derricott has been Chair but has stepped down and Cheryl Callais has volunteered to be Chair. Mark will stay on the committee along with Kathy Showman, Robin and Rob Salthouse. Nancy Langwith has also agreed to be a voice of KCYC at various Kingston community meetings such as Kingston Chamber, Kingston Stakeholders, etc. and at the general meeting when someone from the KCYC-CEC is not present. If you are interested in joining this committee, please reach out to one of its members.

The KCYC Community Engagement Committee is pleased to help with the following Kingston community events in the upcoming 2024/2025 year:

Boys and Girls Christmas Angel Tree: Be an Angel and help make a local kid and/or family enjoy a memorable Christmas that they normally who not have. KCEC will decorate a tree with Angel tag that have children’s gender, age and their Christmas wish list. Pick a tag, go shopping (or shop online). Bring all unwrapped gifts to KCYC no later than Saturday December 7th. (Put the items together in box/bag with your Angel tag, so the B&G Club knows which kid it belongs to. KCEC committee will take pics of your generosity and bring gifts to B&G club wrapping and distribution.

Food Drive: In the past KCYC - CEC has led the KCYC food drive for local charity ShareNet. We are working with ShareNet to determine their needs at this time of the year and will keep you informed. We will send emails, update website and Facebook once we have more details.

Port of Kingston Christmas lights: We all enjoy them, and they help bring cheer to a cold wet dark winter night. The POK is looking for volunteers to help put up lights now. If you have the time, please reach out to the POK for dates/times. Also in January, they will need help taking the lights down and storing for next year. If you volunteer, please take pics (or have someone take your pic) as we like to show the volunteer work KCYC provides.

Kingston Christmas on the Cove:
Saturday December 7th, the Port of Kingston, and the Chamber of Commerce host one of the best events of the year. People come from afar to see the Christmas tree lights and Santa arrive on the big red fire truck. The event can’t be successful without volunteers and KCYC has been a huge supporter since it’s inception. KCTC - CEC is asking for volunteers from serving hot cocoa and cookies and to helping tend to the firepits. Please contact POK for helping with the lights as this is needed now. Please watch for emails and KCYC website to volunteer on December 7th between 3pm – 8pm (we will have shifts) for Christmas on the Cove. We are also asking KCYC members to donate store bought cookies (per Dept of Health, no homemade cookies). Please bring all cookies to the club by Friday night social on December 6th or reach out to one of the KCYC-CEC members to schedule delivery.

Kingston Community Meal
– this is held at the Village Green on the 2nd Friday of the month to bring people together and break bread. KCYC has cooked and served meals in the past and KCEC would like to continue this community event. A date for this event is TBD.

Kingston Road clean-up: This hasn’t been held for several years but is needed. In Spring 2025, KCYC members will don neon orange vests, hats, garbage bags and gloves (all provided) to hit the streets of Kingston to help make clean up what others have left behind.... you never know what you may find, but it surely makes a great story.

4th of July: KCEC chair Cheryl Callais will be the liaison between KCYC and the 4th of July committee to help organize this event. Cheryl will provide details to each of the various KCYC 4th of July event Leads (Pancake breakfast Lead, Beer Tent Lead/Rear Commodore, KCYC parade float Lead, and Hot Dog event Lead). Robin Salthouse has been the parade Lead for the past several years and can help provide guidance, but KCYC–CEC is looking for volunteers for the parade. I know it’s early, but we will need a Parade Lead, Boat/Vehicle for the parade and of course we will need parade walkers to represent KCYC. Please reach out to Robin or another KCYC-CEC member if you are interested in Lead and/or have a boat/vehicle. As we get closer to parade time, we will post on KCYC website for you to sign up as a walker.

If you know of a community event and believe KCYC should be part of, please reach out to the KCYC Community Event Committee. If you volunteer, please take pics (or have someone take your pic) as we like to show the volunteer work KCYC provides.

Thank you, Cheryl, Mark, Kathy, Rob and Robin

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Membership Committee is currently focused on planning for the coming year and recruiting new members. We are in the process of developing a new informational brochure, encouraging current members to invite potential friends and neighbors to attend Friday Nights and Events. Another strategy is to increase visibility through participation in local activities. Other activities include outreach to Kingston boaters and invi9ng boaters from the Guest Dock to visit the Club.

In November the Membership Committee is sponsoring a Ladies Game Night at the Club on Wednesday, November 13 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Participants are asked to bring a favorite game, an appetizer or snack , and their beverage of choice. In the future we will encourage members to invite a friend to join in the fun. We are also are recruiting new members for the Committee. The Membership Committee activities include recruitment of new members, developing applications, new member process, providing membership cards, Burgees, parking stickers, name badges and Club Awards and offering membership focused activities such as game night and events including the Annual Kingston Pub Crawl.

If you are interested in joining the Membership Committee contact Diane Nunez at 206-714-9293.
