COMMODORE'S CORNER

Chuck Turner

Vice_Commodore_2023-24_Chuck_Turner_461595838

Your Board met in January working hard to prepare for the 2025 season. We have been fine tuning the 2025 budget for Membership approval at the February meeting. Recent decreased membership, rising operating costs, and avoiding membership dues increases presents challenges.

Highlights from the January Board meeting included:

  • Acceptance of the proposed parliamentary procedures.
  • Review of the revised 2025 financial budget and approval to present to Membership for approval.
  • Clarification of the $20 individual membership dues for Recreational Boaters of Washington (RBAW) to be paid by club members at their option. The Fleet Captain has sent communication to all members with instructions on how pay through the club’s website.
  • Discussion and adjustment of the contributions to the operating, capital, and long-range contingency funds to meet bylaw requirements.
  • Approval to proceed with replacing window coverings and purchasing materials for sound abatement in the clubhouse.
  • Tabled motion to increase bar prices to be discussed at the February meeting.

I encourage you all to consider supporting RBAW’s efforts representing our boating interests in Olympia and around the Salish Sea by paying the nominal $20 additional membership annual dues.  Have fun and enjoy the fellowship.

Fair winds and following seas.

TREASURER REPORT

John Gantz

So far 2025 has been a very busy start to the year.

  • Ken Dalgleish has ordered the Sound Baffle equipment. It takes about 6 weeks to ship which means they will get here late March. As soon as they come in, we will begin the install process. Expect completion in April.
  • Special thanks to Mark Ryan for replacing the loose front door handle and tightening the loose Ladies Room handle. Steve Page likes baby oil on his toes.
  • As many may already know, Todd Lachelt takes care of the trash bins every week for the club. It basically involves taking the bins on a cart to the dumpsters at the port. He has been doing this by himself for years but I would like to get him some help. Basically, I am looking for three volunteers to be on stand by, that Todd can call once in a while to take the trash cans to the dumpsters. These are also easy volunteer hours to get. So, if you can be on the trash team let me or Todd know.
  • Special thanks go out to Eric MacEllven, Mark Ryan and Steve Young for installing new blinds on all the windows. They did a great job and Steve was very meticulous in getting member input so we were sure to get the perfect shade of off-white to match the room.
  • On January 29th, there was an open meeting for anyone interested in participating in the Annual Facilities Plan review. The resulting update of the Facilities Plan for 2025 is posted in the web page under Club Documents:  Updated Facilities Plan 2025. Special thanks to Ken Dagleish, Steve Young, Mark Ryan, Greg Colt, Cecile Schwedes and Shelly Gantz for attending and participating in the process.

Activities at the bar continue to run smoothly, particularly attributable to John and Shelley Gantz who covered the bar setup and breakdown for the Polar Bear Dinner.  Many thanks from me and all of us KCYCers.  Now for some useful information:Wine Enthusiast.  This link from the Wine Enthusiast gives a concise guide for wine quality by region and year.  Enjoy!

Well the first month of 2025 came on for us as expected. So much so that revenues beat plan by 10% and expenses were right on target. Reserves for 2025 are almost all topped off, and cash is almost equal to a year's worth of income. We are, however, noticing a "snowbird effect." I.e., members disappearing in winter to go to warmer places. You can tell which members by checking their tans.

KCYC 2025 Cruise Schedule (as of 1/8/25)

  • The Polar Bear Cruise was a great success!! Thank you to all of the volunteers. A BIG thank you to Neil and Karen Parker for preparing the prime rib and baked salmon. A BIG thank you to Simona for coordinating the silent auction and raffle. A BIG thank you to Shelley and John Gantz for lugging the bar to the Edmonds Yacht Club. A BIG thank you to the many volunteers who helped set up, serve, and clean up. Due to weather conditions only two boats made it to Edmonds for the weekend. Additional details will be provided at the February general meeting.
  • We are looking for more boats for the Daffodil Marine Festival & Parade. Currently, only one boat has signed up. If you plan on taking your boat then register for a slip and let them know you are with KCYC. Daffodil Marine Festival & Parade
  • The annual KCYC Boater Education Day is schedule for March 15th and is open for registration. It is free for KCYC members and $10 for non-members. There is a great line up of presentations that are relevant to all KCYC members. View the Boater Education Day - 3/15/2025
  • All of the 2025 cruises are open for registration on the Events and Cruises List on the KCYC calendar. The registrations are only for boats at this time. There a limited number of available slips for each cruise. You are encouraged to register early to reserve a slip. Early registrations also help if I need to request additional slips.
  • There is an opportunity to join the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club during our March 28th thru 30th Port Orchard cruise in the activity tent and participate in their bacon and bourbon event. More details to follow.
  • If you want to join the KCYC corporate RBAW membership then please register by February 21. RBAW Registration.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Brrrrrr it was a cold January! So glad that’s over with!  The cold weather didn’t keep us away from some fun times - Diane hosted her Wednesday Ladies Game Night, and Kim Clark with Jennie Tucker put on the always so popular Baked Potato Bar… and the dice for LeftRightCenter came out right after dinner.

Then we were off to Edmonds for the traditional Polar Bear Cruise and the Fleet Fundraiser on Saturday - Neil and Karen Parker really outdid themselves, AGAIN! The roast beef was to die for, and many members enjoyed the new addition to the menu, perfectly roasted salmon. Karen even made individual desserts, served with ice cream. And how do we know the dinner was really really good? There were NO LEFTOVERS!  The Fleet Fundraiser, comprised of Silent Auction, Raffle items, and 50/50 Raffle went off without a hitch, thank you all for playing! For the results of this effort, please refer to a separate email I sent out right after the event.

As I write this, on Valentine’s Day no less, it’s exactly 36 (THIRTY SIX!) days till the first day of SPRING!  On Valentine’s Day we’re having Meet and Mingle with Edmonds Yacht Club, on their own winter cruise. They’re treating us to Pulled Pork sandwiches, and we’re bringing appetizers and cookies.

DON’T MISS THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE for the MARDI GRAS NEXT WEEK!  Saturday, February 22nd Cheryl Callais and friends are going all out on a full menu, and a live band to boot!  Are you hungry? Your tastebuds will be tantalized, but not on fire. Some people think Cajun food = spicy, but it’s not, Cajun food = FLAVOR. The foods being served will be flavorful...NOT not burn your taste buds! Dont forget to register and bring your friends and family. Gumbo....we will have 4 pots of Gumbo for our Gumbo Cookoff, so eat up and pick your favorite. Ya’ll will be the judges.

CONFIRMED DATES:  Upcoming Events

  • March 14th Cecile Schwedes will host a “$5 Souper Night”. Registrations are now open.
  • May 10th (Kingston Opening Day weekend) Mary Ann Harris has agreed to take on an Italian Dinner for the Fleet and guests. Can you help? Give me a call, or reach out to her directly please.
  • June 7th: 3rd Annual Pirate Festival! We will need volunteers to make this “Membership Drive” event a fun and successful day. We plan to open the Clubhouse, and have booth down in the Park as well. Rita Osborn has volunteered to head up our efforts. Please let her know you can help?

PENDING DATES:  Here are the dates I’d like to fill with funtivities:

  • April 24 or 25 (between Daffodil Festival, Easter, and Seattle Opening Day)
  • June 13th: Summer Friday night! Roche Harbor YC will be in town. Anyone up for some Burgers and even Music maybe? Let me know if you can spearhead this effort!

Text, email or call me with any ideas and suggestions for early spring events. Specifically, I am thinking of… maybe nachos bar…. Grazing table (giant charcuterie), having Frida come for another “Sip and Paint”. I’m hoping some of our “newer” members will have some ideas and want to get involved? Call me or text me!

In Spring 2025, KCYC members will don neon orange vests, hats, garbage bags and gloves (all provided) to hit the streets of Kingston to help make clean up what others have left behind.... you never know what you may find, but it surely makes a great story. Date to be determined.

Welcome Doug and Janice Jones

Doug and Janice were referred by Jim DiIanni after attending our chili cookoff last month. They are interested in cruises, reciprocal moorage, and volunteering at the club.  Doug and Janice also have an RV as well as a boat and would like to participate in some of the RV campouts. Having fun and socializing with like-minded people is their goal. Both are retired. Jan was a high school chemistry teacher and administrator, and Doug was a Delta Airlines pilot. Jan now plays Disc Golf and participates in tournaments all over the country. Their interests are skiing, camping, hiking, gardening, biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, disc golf, and of course boating. Truly a man and woman of many talents and interests!

Welcome Paul Barrett

Paul heard about KCYC through various club members. He has been in the area for 17 years and relocated to the area for employment opportunities. He is currently retired and enjoys scuba diving, boating, fishing, skiing and family. His wife is a music teacher at Gordon Elementary School.  Paul owns a boat and is looking forward to being involved with other members on cruises etc..
