Second Annual Spring Boater Education Day


Spring Boater Education Day is Set for Saturday, March 26th
Doors open at 8:30am; Class starts at 9:00am

Join us for a day long series of presentations by various club members and industry professionals. There will be five separate topics, with one hour allowed for each speaker including Q&A. Below is a schedule for the day's activities, along with a list of the presenters and their topics. The fee for the day is $5 for members and $10 for non-members, payable in cash at the door. The price includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Registration is required.

Here's the Line Up
  • CONTINENTAL STYLE BREAKFAST
  • 9:00 am “Marine State Parks in the San Juan Islands” Presenter - Chris Guidotti, Washington State Parks This session covers general park information regarding marine parks and then specific information on some of the more popular parks in the San Juan Islands.
  • 10:00 am “Recommended Engine Maintenance, Tools, and Supplies” – Brandon Haines, Achievement Marine This session will discuss and provide guidelines for proper engine maintenance and maintenance schedule. What tools and supplies to keep on board will be covered. And recommended parts/fluids to keep on hand will be discussed.
  • 11:00 am “Navigating in Adverse Conditions using today's available electronics” – Dave McBride, Sail and Power Squadron This session includes use of AIS, Radar, Chart plotter, Foghorn, and VHF Radio and sharing of some personal experiences.
  • 12:00 LUNCH BREAK and Half-time Entertainment “Lessons Learned in Provisioning” – Patricia Morgan, author of Aweigh of Life
  • 12:30 pm "Navigation - What to do when the power goes out” – Neil Parker, KCYC Member What happens when the instruments go dark? What do you do then? This presentation will recount one such event and will cover reading and using paper charts.
  • 1:30 pm “O Canada – Passage Planning, Weather, Border Crossing, Shoulder Destinations from Victoria, and Canadian Things You Should Know!” — Nancy Langwith, KCYC Member The Fleet is headed to Victoria this August! This presentation will cover the 3 main strategies to get North of the Straits, Canadian weather sources and tips, how and where to cross the border.
  • 2:30 pm Commander of Bremerton Sail and Power Squadron message and upcoming Washington Boater Education Card training coming to KCYC
